Sleep is an important aspect in any human being life but unfortunately in
today’s time an normal healthy human get’s very few hours of sleep. On an
average according to the conducted surveys it is said an average office
employer get’s maximum five to six hours of sleep on daily basis where at least six to eight hours of sleep is recommended to an individual. Therefore the emphasis is basically on importance of sleep on mental health.
What is importance of sleep ?
● Sleep helps us to relax ourselves from our busy, tiring day. A person who
sleeps regularly and get enough sleep haS a better health condition
than any other person who stresses out himself by overworking.
In a scientific scenario it is said when a person does not sleep enough he
tends to get more stress, faces lot of health issues which might become
serious and also suffers from fatigue. Not only physical issues that are
linked to our sleep but our sleep has a direct connection with our mental
state of mind too.
● When a person is stressed he tend to skip his meals and his daily life
schedule also get’s worsened. This stress also causes other health issues
specifically mental issues such as anxiety and depression etc. therefore, people must stress more on importance of sleep and health. Poor sleep can increase the risk of having poor health and mental health and poor health also can make it harder to sleep.
● Mental health when it comes to sleep is so important as people face lot
of mental issues due to this sleep depriviation. There are more than
seventy types of sleep disorders that the most common are insomnia,
obstructive slup apnea and various movement syndromes. Types of
sleep disorder prevalence and impact vary by psychiatric diagnosis.
Though such syndromes and disorders are overlapping.
i. Depression:
Studies evidently seen that most of the adult
patients with major depression and about ninety percent
children with this disorder, do not understand the importance of sleep
and thus face problems such as insomnia or sleep apnea. Not only this
but studies also showed that the people suffering from
insomnia in the past also end up suffering from depression.
ii. Bipolar Disorder:
Too much of sleep creates a problem.
People suffering from this disorder tend to sleep more than
average people however there are chances that people
during this bipolar depression suffer from insomnia and
restless sleep.
iii. Anxiety disorders:
Sleep problems affect more than fifty
percent of adult patents with generalized anxiety disorder,
are common in those with past- traumatic stress disorder
and may occur in panic disorder, obsessive compulsive
disorder and phobias. This disorder as time passing is
becoming common among children and adolescents.
It may evidently seen that children suffering from anxiety issues
are most likely to sleep less deeply and taking longer time
to fall asleep when compared with a control group of
healthy children.
iv. ADHD:
Various sleep problems affect fifty percent of
children with ADHD. Typical problems include difficulty
falling asleep, shorter sleep duration, and restless slumber.
The symptoms of ADHD and sleeping difficulties overlap so
much it may be difficult to tease them apart.
● Though mental health issues are the concerns of adult but children in
contemporary times are facing more problems than adults. Most of their
problems are just caused because they don’t understand the importance of sleep therefore, it is dire need to emphasis and make them aware about the importance of sleep in order to improve their mental health issues and to prevent it from further deteriorating it.
● Changing lifestyles also causes some of problems which affects sleep and
mental health both. Though physical activity, sleep hygiene, relaxation
techniques can help in overcoming sleeping disorders that took place
because of mental health.
It is said that poor sleep may often be a symptom or consequence
of an existing psychological condition, but sleep problems are also
thought to cause or contribute to the onset of difficult mental
disorders including depression and anxiety.
Due to this reason, addressing our sleep problems early is important that can help protect our overall health and wellness.
Sleep is so important for our mental health in contemporary times where there is lot of competition among individuals and lot of inferior complex. People become highly distressed and concern to seek their own
happiness like others. It is all happening due to the so called
perfectness shown on social media.
Therefore in order to balance
their social life as well as daily schedule people tend to skip their
sleeping hours and all of it causes adverse effect on mental
health. It is important to emphasis and aware people about how
important is sleep for our mental health.
Campaigns should be held widely on social media as well as in physical mode so that people take care of their sleep too, by this we can overcome a big obstacle and help a large amount of general public.
