Superstition : publicity , attract and attack

What is superstition?

A widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief.

You would be wrong if you think only neurotic or depressed people hold onto these beliefs.

The human mind is quick to make causal connections between beliefs and events .The causal connection does not have to be between a superstitious belief and something bad happening. The human tendency to make causal connections helps explain another powerful motivating factor in this. People feel better if they have a sense of control over events. There are all kinds of variations on the same theme.

EFFECTS ON MENTAL HEALTH

Superstitions are long-held beliefs that appear to be rooted in coincidence or cultural tradition rather than logic or facts.

Our ancestors didn’t come up with superstitions because they were more ignorant or naive than we are, but because they lacked many concrete ways to influence the survival outcomes of their lives. Superstitions offered a way to feel more in control, the same way they do now. That’s why highly educated, sophisticated people still believe in certain superstitions.

Most superstitions are fun and harmless, whether you sincerely believe in them or not. But some superstitions can play into mental health conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Advantages of superstition:

Some superstitions have elements of truth and or safety involved. For example bad luck for walking under a ladder or breaking a mirror. Both are dangerous either from being hit in the head with a paint tin or cut on mirrored glass. If you avoid these practices because you believe in bad luck when otherwise you would not this is a benefit.

Praying, particularly in the Muslim way can be reasonable exercise.

Remaining positive in the face of adversity could lead to success if you believe your diety has your back.

Disadvantages of superstition:

People who have other mental health conditions, such as generalized anxiety disorder, can also be negatively impacted by superstitions.

When superstitions become a strong motivator for participating in or avoiding certain activities, it’s an indication that an underlying mental health condition may be present.
